ATLANTIS
Shooting took place at Twickenham film studios for two days of ‘dry’ effects, followed by a day on the Ealing backlot to shoot the ‘wet’ events.
Miniature sets were dressed with ¼ scale pots and furniture built to match the work done by the art department in South Africa during the live action shoot.
Pyrotechnics were provided by Peter Kersey and comprised of a number of small black powder and petrol charges designed to produce large fireballs within the miniature temple set.
Pyroclastic flows were replicated using high pressure air mortars and shredded paper, the models backed with clear plastic tents to limit the extent of fall-out and clear-up after each take.
The tsunami effects were shot outdoors, using large muck tipping skips to deliver half a tonne of water through the doors of the model sets on each take.
Regular Model Unit DoP Peter Tyler shot all the effects on two high speed super 16mm Arris, varying angles to build a library of destructive events. |
